Previous books that have inspired me

???
I am struggling to remember the name of a book i read when younger which made interested me in terms of body image. i remember that the main character, a teenage girl, gets spotted and becomes a model even though she thinks her best friend is so much prettier. The best friend sells a story about her in the newspapers from jealousy when sne starts becoming famous due to dating a popstar. It stops going well as she realises how nasty and superficial the world of fame can be. it was a great read and i wish i could remember what it was! will keep looking.

Girls Under Pressure, by Jacqueline Wilson

The other book i remember enjoying as a teen which broached the subject of girls and their bodies, was Jacqueline Wilson's Girls Under Pressure. The overview is that three best friends are at the brink of womanhood, and trying to get to grips with who they are. When a teen magazine is looking for a model for the cover of their magazines, Ellie Nadine and Magda are all under pressure and become obsessed with the way they look. Magda is confident but becomes obsessed with designer labels. Later on however she is worried about how the way she dresses makes boys treat her. Then there is Nadine who is gothic and pale, yet when the modelling agency shows interest, she begins to change her look to fit in with the commercial look - much to her undoing. Between the two of the is Ellie, who feels plain and normal, becoming conviced she is fat so falls in to a spiral of bulimia. The way the story is told by Wilson is brilliant because it maintains a sense of humour despite the traumatic events it covers for the three girls.

Drop Dead Gorgeous (2006) Television show for BBC 3

The 2006 television show, Drop Dead Gorgeous starring Sinead Moynihan, is interesting as it shows how a girl from a working class background has her life upturned after being spotted in a local cafe by a model agent. Things become more difficult as although contracts are quickly signed and her professional life is flourishing with national campaigns, other aspects of her life suffer. Her troublesome sister is jealous and the people in her estate are bitter and trash her house during parties as they resent her and her family's sudden good fortune. Meanwhile, her father is uncomfortable and embarrassed of photos of his daughter being drooled over by men, including his own friends. I will soon buy and watch the first series of this show in order to see how they approach it in more detail.
